TikTok Empowers Creators to Label AI-Generated Content for Transparency

TikTok is launching a new tool to help creators label their AI-generated content in an effort to promote transparency and responsible content creation practices. The platform recognizes the potential for AI-generated content to confuse or mislead viewers and aims to address this by allowing creators to clearly inform their audience when content has been significantly altered or edited using AI technology.

Key Points of Automated AI Generated Labelling:

New Label for AI-Generated Content: Creators will have access to a new label that can be applied to any content that has been entirely generated or significantly edited by AI. This label will help viewers understand the role of AI in content creation and aligns with TikTok's Community Guidelines' synthetic media policy, which requires labeling AI-generated content containing realistic images, audio, or video.

Educational Resources: TikTok plans to release educational videos and resources to help the TikTok community understand how and why to use these labels effectively. The goal is to make these labels a valuable tool for creators and viewers to share and provide context for AI-generated content.

Automated AI-Generated Content Labels: TikTok is testing an "AI-generated" label that will eventually be applied automatically to content detected as edited or created with AI. This aims to provide more clarity about AI-powered TikTok products. TikTok is also updating its guidelines for Effect House creators to include "AI" in the names and labels of AI effects.

Consulting Experts: TikTok consulted with its Safety Advisory Councils and industry experts, including MIT's Dr. David G. Rand, to develop these labeling updates. Dr. Rand's research helped shape the design of the "AI-generated labels."

Partnerships and Commitments: TikTok has committed to industry best practices for AI transparency and responsible innovation through initiatives like the Partnership on AI's Responsible Practices for Synthetic Media. The platform continues to collaborate with experts, peers, and civil society to address complex questions related to AI.

TikTok recognizes the evolving landscape of AI-generated content and aims to adapt its approach as needed. These labeling efforts are part of TikTok's commitment to ensuring transparency and responsible content creation in the age of AI-generated media.
