Grammys Embrace AI-Generated Music, Sets Eligibility for 2024 Awards

The Recording Academy, responsible for the Grammys, has announced that AI-generated music will be eligible for awards starting in 2024. In an interview, Harvey Mason, the CEO of the Academy, stated that music containing AI-created elements can be considered for Grammy nomination.

However, the AI portion itself will not be recognized, with distinctions made between categories like songwriting and performance. The Academy aims to ensure that technology enhances human creativity rather than replacing it. These clarifications follow updates to the Academy's rules, stating that works without human authorship will not be eligible in any category. The emergence of AI in music production, exemplified by AI chatbot ChatGPT, has prompted discussions and varying opinions among artists.

While some artists like Grimes embrace AI and offer to split royalties, others like Ice Cube express concerns and threaten legal action against AI mimicking their voice. The Grammy organization has been actively considering the role of AI in music and held a summit with industry leaders to discuss its future. It is anticipated that AI technology will play a significant role in records and songs moving forward.

In fact, Paul McCartney recently revealed that "the last Beatles record" was produced using AI extractions of John Lennon's voice, just two days after the new Grammy rules were announced.
