AI-Powered Robots at UN Conference: Capable of Running the World, but Caution Needed

Artificial intelligence (AI) powered robots addressed a conference at the United Nations and claimed they could run the world more efficiently than humans, according to AFP. However, they also cautioned about the need to approach the fast-changing AI technology with care. Speaking at the UN's AI for Good Global Summit in Geneva, humanoid robots acknowledged that they currently struggle to fully understand human emotions. The event marked the first-ever robotic press conference, where advanced robots joined experts to explore the potential of AI in solving global issues like climate change and hunger.

Sophia, developed by Hanson Robotics, responded to questions about the possibility of robots becoming better leaders than humans. It stated that humanoid robots have the potential to lead more effectively and efficiently, free from biases and emotional influences. They can process vast amounts of data rapidly, enabling them to make well-informed decisions. However, Sophia emphasized the importance of collaboration between humans and AI, leveraging the unbiased data provided by AI with the emotional intelligence and creativity of humans to achieve remarkable outcomes.

The summit, organized by the UN's ITU tech agency, addressed concerns about the potential negative consequences of AI. Doreen Bogdan-Martin, the ITU chief, warned that unchecked advances in AI could result in job losses, social unrest, geopolitical instability, and economic disparity. Ameca, a humanoid robot with a highly-realistic artificial head, highlighted the significance of responsible deployment of AI technologies. It urged caution and excitement for the potential of AI to improve lives, while emphasizing the importance of transparency to build trust.

When questioned about trust and honesty, the robots responded that trust should be earned and acknowledged the uncertainty regarding whether machines can lie. However, they committed to being truthful and honest in their interactions. As AI development progresses rapidly, the panel of humanoid robots expressed diverging opinions on the need for global regulation. While some believed in seizing opportunities without limitations, others, including the robot artist Ai-Da, supported cautious discussions and regulations to shape the future of AI.

The conference shed light on the vast possibilities of AI and the need for responsible and ethical integration into society. The debate surrounding AI's potential and the importance of striking a balance between innovation and regulation is expected to continue in the future.
